Marco Mucciarelli graduated from the University of Bologna in Physics in 1983. His main research interests involved the statistical analysis of seismicity data, the estimation of seismic hazard for specific sites (including lifelines) and larger areas, reservoir induced seismicity, seismotectonic modelling, and earthquake hydrological and geochemical precursors.
Between 1979 -1984, Marco started his research activities at the Universities of Bologna and Siena as a postgraduate. In 1985 and 1986, he worked as a contract researcher at the University of Siena, where he became a non-tenured professor of "Geological Data Analysis” until 1992. Since 1987, Marco was the Head of the Seismology group at ISMES S.p.A.. He occupied this position until 1998, when he became a Full Professor at Basilicata University, a role that he retained until 2012 when he was nominated as the 2016 Director of the Center for Seismological Research of the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS).
During his career Marco participated in several EU funded projects, such as SCENARIO and SEISMOCARE. He was also responsible for the scientific aspects of the Chernobyl NPP Seismic Hazard Estimate (TACIS) that made him known as a uniquely gifted scientist who was interested in analyzing all aspects of seismology, and in establishing close cooperation with practitioners from other disciplines. He also acted as the coordinator of the FAUST project Marco participated in many other international projects. In particular, as Director of the NATO Science for Peace project "Assessment of seismic site amplification and building vulnerability in former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, Croatia and Slovenia", he facilitated the international networking between different seismological communities in the EU.
From 2000 to 2007, Marco coordinated microzonation studies of more than 50 municipalities in the Marche and Basilicata regions of Italy, and from 2005 to 2007 he coordinated the project "Scenari di scuotimento e di danno atteso in aree di interesse prioritario e/o strategico" within the framework of "Progetti Sismologici e Vulcanologici di interesse per il Dipartimento della Protezione Civile".

Marco published more than 100 papers in international journals and proceedings and more than 80 papers in national journals, books and proceedings.
